Final practice before MS VEX Championships

via IFTTT

Last day of practice

Today is the last day of practice for all of my VEX teams.  Tomorrow is the start of the VEX state championships.   We are having driver drama, autonomous timing issues, and teenage junk.  I will be posting video and pictures later today after practice.   Wish us luck.

VEX team 7536 tournament ready

This is the final version of the robot
Team 7536 is ready for battle.  We only have a few things for them to finish but we could go in right to a tournament. Only things left are the anti tip bracing and autonomous routines.   More to come

VEX team 7536 lift fixed

via IFTTT

Today we were trying to solve a problem with the lift swaying on the way up.  In the past few days teh lift would lean really bad to one sire.  I found the problem with lift when 2 team members and I were experimenting.  We noticed one arm lifted aa little easier on one side at a particular point in the lift cycle.  I got in front of the lift and down below it then used the radios to lift.  After watching one arm stick slightly at one point we say that 2 screw heads on the gear were striking the C channel on the lift tower.  It was less than 1/2 mm rub, but it really caused the problem.  So... after about 1.5 hours of tearing down the lift tower and re-spacing things... we have it fixed!  Thanks to Kelvin and Martin for getting in and getting it done!  It took all of us to get it done.  Now to rebuild the conveyor.

Today we had professional development for teachers, but luckily I had worked another day earlier in the year that counted.  So...  What did I do on my day off.... worked with my students all afternoon on their robots for state championships  Both HS robots are basically finished.  7536 has the lift and all aspects working, but they are in the final stages of an anti-tip mechanism.  7536 B is done and just has to work on antonymous routines.

We will be going to the career and tech tomorrow to practice with their teams.  Hopefully they will come up with some good routines and alliance partnerships.  Video and pics to follow tomorrow.

Ridgeland HS VEX Robotics
#rhsrobotics
On top: VEX 7536 team is almost done.  The conveyor is built but still needs tweaking.  The frame has to be trimmed and lots of little things need to be done, but they are doing a great job!

At the bottom: VEX team 7536B robot for state.  The two green wheels at the top move up and down on the user control so that they can pick up skyrise.
MS VEX VRC State championships are in 1.5 weeks

Today was an interesting day as far as education goes.  I have been teaching series and parallel resistance circuits as well as general electricity.  I gave the 1st quiz on parallel resistance and I just cannot understand why some people cannot understand that all you have to do is plug in the numbers.  they were able to use a calculator, but many just had a brain block.  We worked them for days, but when the quiz came around... you had the usual... I forgot my calculator---- Google it;  I forgot my pencil--- good luck;  I forgot how to work my calculator--- should have paid attention; I just don't get it--- plug the dad-gum numbers in!!!!  Anyway I guess that things were really OK and most students got it.  Next we move on to showing the rules of parallel and series circuits are far as voltage and current goes.  After that we build breadboard circuits.

My VEX robotics team 7536 from Newton City Skyrise
This is the first attempt at blogging about STEM and all the related topics.  I am Mr. Richardson; STEM teacher at OTMS in Ridgeland, MS.  My classes are into electronics, robotics, CAD, and many other things.  I also have 4 competitive VEX robotics teams.  I will post pics, new topics, and all sorts of stuff.  Feel free to post yours as well.
